INFORMATION FOR MIGRANTS AND REFUGEE PARENTS

On December 7, 2024, the event "Know Your Rights in Germany: Information for Migrant and Refugee parents" took place at the Prenzlauer Berg community center. Organized by Space2groW /Frauenkreise and funded by Moskito and Demokratie Leben, the event brought together more than 60 people, including children currently living in two communal accommodations for refugees in the Pankow district.

Through our work, we have become familiar with the wide range of barriers migrant or refugee parents in Germany have to face when navigating the Youth Welfare Office. In response to this issue, we hosted this event to create a safe and suitable space for them in which to discuss their rights and responsibilities regarding said office. The event consisted of a workshop, as well as an hour-long open panel discussion surrounding the topic. In order to make the environment as inclusive and comfortable as possible, we arranged to have translations in eight languages, organized transportation, childcare, and refreshments.

This event is part of a series aimed at addressing and highlighting the racist and discriminatory nature of places such as the Youth Welfare Office. Additionally, this series of events aims to initiate networks and alliances and support families affected by the issue, so they can live happily in Germany. Moreover, additional resources, such as the brochure "Racism in Child Protective Services Taken into Care by the German Youth Welfare Office" (presented December 7th), were created in order to provide access to this essential information.

In the future, we want to advance this topic further and unite more voices. We want to start this process by creating a brochure based on the results, discussions, and stories shared during the panel discussion in our event "Know Your Rights in Germany: Information for Migrant and Refugee Parents".
